Final Project : 60s Stop Motion

Stop motion is a filmmaking technique that involves taking a series of photographs and then playing them in a sequence to create the illusion of movement. Our final project required us to work in pairs and create a 1-minute stop motion video.

Week 1 : 3 Favourite Stop Motion Video

Video 1 ; Crazy office worker's night meal by omozoc

In the stop-motion video, a late worker gets faxes saying he's fired. Angry, he tears his clothes and turns them, along with his phone, into sushi. After eating, he gets another fax saying the previous ones were just jokes. I like how Omozoc uses things like clothes, office supplies, shoes, and a phone to make the sushi.

Video 2 ; DISTORTION by Guldies

This stop-motion video is really amazing. It's so smooth that it doesn't look like stop-motion at all. The style is simple and abstract, with characters designed in geometric shapes. The animation techniques, like squash and stretch and anticipation, are used well, especially with the bouncy movements and the water droplet. The detailed sound effects make the animation even better. This stop-motion has an abstract idea and no clear story, so the meaning can be anything or nothing at all. The title gives a hint about what it's about, but the visuals don't show a specific event, just abstract ideas. It's very open-ended, and I like that it allows for freedom of interpretation.

Video 3 ; Lost & Found | Oscar Shortlisted Stop-Motion Animation

This heartwarming stop-motion video tells a sweet story of friendship. The team uses knitted toys and different materials to make beautiful scenes, creating a visually appealing result. I admire the creative storyline and the team's hard work in making such a big and touching production.

Week 10 : Ideation

Theme : Global Warming - Save the polar bear

Storyline : A hungry polar bear made of paper walks on the ice, searching for food. As it moves, the ice starts to melt because of global warming. The bear struggles to stay on the ice, but eventually, it falls into the water and drowns. The film ends with a quote: "There is no Planet B.”

Week 11 : Proposal

As with any other project, we first had to make a proposal of our story idea, plot segmentation and storyboard etc.

Week 12 : Shooting

We had our shooting on Jul 22nd, 2023 (Mon) in the Photography Studio.

Materials: A4 paper ,Black Marker, Scissors, Glue, Graph paper

Before shooting, we made the shooting element with A4 paper, draw out and cut it down one by one.

We used my phone with the Stop Motion Studio app to film the video. We took turns to replace the work, sometimes I was in charge of moving the props, kaixuan was in charge of filming, sometimes she was in charge of moving the props, I was in charge of filming, the whole process is quite difficult and hard, because if you move the angle is too big, the whole film out of the effect is not smooth.

After done shooting in five hours ,we have about 250 picture in total, I export all the shooting picture from stop motion app then upload it in google drive.

Week 13 : Stop Motion Editing

We decided using Kai Xuan's MacBook to edit the video since I using my phone to shooting. Before we started editing , we organised the clips to make sure thier location is in the same place to avoid missing files.

Fig 1.4 ; Adding clips into the sequence

After that , we figure out the most suitable amount of frames for our stop motion video is 2 frames , so we change it from original 5 frames to 2 frames.

While kai xuan was arranging the photos, I was looking on youtube or pixabay for sound effects to put in the film. Then , kai xuan imported all the sound effects that I found to our stop motion video and she also added some audio transitions to make it smoother.

Lastly, she adjusted the volume of each sound effect to the perfect volume to showing up.

REFLECTION

This stop motion project was quite challenging during the shooting phase. We struggled to maintain consistent object and camera placement, leading to variations in the positioning of objects across the clips. However, we successfully solved these issues through editing, adjusting clip speed and duration, and incorporating sound effects, which ultimately made the outcome more engaging. Despite its imperfections, we found the project highly interesting and thoroughly enjoyed the entire video-making process. We are satisfied with the final result, even though it may not be perfect or exceptional.
